About Us

The Club
Formed in 1878 for the benefit of former pupils of the College, the Hurst Johnian Club is one of the oldest old pupils' societies in the country.

The Club's aims are to enable members to keep in touch with each other after they have left the College and to maintain links between the College and members of the Club.

The Hurst Johnian Club has developed and maintained a close relationship with the College's Director of Careers and provides OJs (as they are known) to talk to the Vth and VIth Forms on various aspects of the business, academic and entertainment worlds.

OJ Sport
The Golf Club is very active, taking part in the Halford-Hewitt and Grafton-Morrish competitions as well as running its own meetings at different venues.

The Rugby Club, (once a thriving club) is dormant at the moment, and is looking for some volunteers to take it on.

Cricket week is one of the most prominent events in the school calendar, and is supported by a large number of OJs during the 7 days.

Shooting has always been a prominent activity and the Club regularly supports a member of the College Shooting VIII. Netball is also developing as more girls become OJs.

Whatever your interests, we are always prepared to support new sports.

Etheldreda Weekend
The School kindly invites all former pupils to revisit Hurst during the Etheldreda Weekend in June. There is a Choral Evensong on the Saturday evening led by a choir composed of OJs followed by a Dinner.  On the Sunday, there is a special service in the College Chapel followed by a BBQ and Sporting fixtures - cricket, football and girls' sports.

Events
Club activities are not limited to sport.  The Club also encourages members to organize their own activities and interest groups. In this respect the Land Society has led the way. There are a number of branches, the most notable being that in Hong Kong.

Bursary Fund
The Club is building up a Bursary Fund to help children of OJs continue their education at Hurst if their parents fall on hard times.

The Travel Fund
The travel fund was established to help new OJ's who wish to travel abroad, especially with organisations such as Operation Raleigh and Project Trust.
