22nd July 2010
Played at: Stoneham Golf Club, Bassett, Southampton
On a glorious golf course and on a perfect summer's afternoon, the Old Hurst Johnians secured a memorable victory against the Old Canfordians.
This is a regular July fixture, and honours tend to be evenly shared.
This year was to be an 8 - a - side 4 ball better ball, but the Canfordians were 2 short, so 2 of them played a single against our pairs.
First out were Jeremy Waud and Dan Burstow, playing against Richard Putman, a scratch handicapper and one of their Halford Hewitt team. (Canford got through to the quarter finals this year !). This was a tight match, but Hurst grit prevailed with a 2 up win.
Next out were Nick Budge and Rick Holgate, paired against Andy Haworth, another scratch handicapper. Similar to match 1 honours went backwards and forwards, but Hurst again came out winners with a 2 up margin.
The 3rd pairing of Dudley Stratford and Paul Ruddlesdin played very tidy golf to wear down the Canford captain Ben Richards and his partner Andy Flew to achieve a creditable 2/1 win.
The 4th pairing of John Waterfall and Derek Pitt had a struggle against the strong Canford pairing of Steve Goodwin and Richard Baxter, and went down 3/2.
Overall a 3/1 victory for Hurst. Well played everyone.
A steak and chips meal, followed by cheese and biscuits in the club dining room with a few bottles of red wine rounded off a very pleasant and successful event, and we look forward to doing battle again next year, hopefully with a similar result.
