19 Feb 2010 - Halford Hewitt Warm Up

The OJ team of ten including Patrick McGahan's guest, Mike Strong, visited Deal and Sandwich for a two day warm up and team selection session. Budgie and Masters had to withdraw from the event at short notice just leaving ten for the twelve slot practice allocation. The weather was surprisingly kind with Friday starting off cold and slightly damp and improving within an hour to reveal a dry and pleasant is somewhat chilly day for our well covered up golfers. The morning foursome matches were tidy, none more so that Simon Clapham and Jeremy Waud recording a 74 off the yellow tees. The results were;

Jeremy Waud & Simon Clapham  5/4 v Ed Welch© & Rick Holgate

Patrick McGahan & Mike Strong  1up v Dan Burstow & Russell Ogden

Alex Taylor  4/3 v Richard Kelly

The afternoon commenced after the first curry of the day and several bottles of red wine (average quality) and Patrick still demanding strokes - Waud and Burstow had an impressive 76 which was eclipsed by Ogden and Kelly's 74 only to lose their match! - Others found the scratch format more in keeping with the main event, but that's being a Bursar for you!

Jeremy Waud & Dan Burstow 3/2 v Ed Welch© & Alex Taylor

Patrick McGahan & Mike Strong 1up v & Russell Ogden & Richard Kelly

Simon Clapham 1 up v Rick Holgate

A long evening of wine tasting at the Kings head was followed by the customary curry at ‘Mellud' in Deal and then back to the Kings Head for more beer and darts for those with sufficient stamina.

The frost delayed start at Royal St Georges in Sandwich was a small price to pay for the magnificent sunny conditions that we enjoyed for the whole round on this magnificent course which hosts the Open next year - results for this final round were;

Jeremy Waud & Dan Burstow 4/3 v Rick Holgate & Russell Ogden

Simon Clapham & Ed Welch© 2/1 v Richard Kelly & Alex Taylor

Patrick McGahan 4/3 v Mike Strong

An impressive weekend's golf for both Ed and Simon who have only represented the school in the Hewitt once each - this form should earn them both a fairly safe team place off their respective 8 handicaps. Waudo, Claps and Mc Gahan maintained unbeaten records for the weekend which as usual was a great success and even greater value for all concerned.
