In 1849, Hurstpierpoint College was founded by Nathaniel Woodard, an Anglican priest in the Tractarian tradition with a passion for education. Woodard schools have a firm conviction that education is best delivered within a community whose life, thoughts and actions are shaped by Christian belief and practice. At Hurst we take our choral and congregational singing very seriously and our worship in Chapel is at the heart of all that we do. The Choir enhances our worship and acts as a means whereby the Hurst community might grow in joyful confidence as they lift their hearts and voices in order to ‘seek those things which are above.'

Hurstpierpoint College is justifiably proud of its music. The Choir and Chamber Choir fulfil busy schedules and sing services in school once a week as well as singing in cathedrals and churches across the south east of England. The Choir regularly tours and has recently undertaken trips to Cape Town (2007) and California (2009) during which it broadcast Evensong live and performed as part of the Monterey Jazz Festival. The Chapel Choir is open to anyone, regardless of their experience and ability and the Chamber Choir is selected from that group. Both groups aim to give pupils as wide a musical experience as is possible.
Music at Hurst is far from an exclusively choral affair. The list of ensembles that are rehearsing every week is enviably long and varies from a Baroque Quartet to a Saxophone Ensemble and a thriving Jazz Band. The Orchestra continues to flourish as do the various rock groups that exist under the umbrella title of ‘The Hurst Rockers'.
